Abstract

This dissertation examines the profound impact of childhood sexual abuse on parenting
perceptions and behaviors. Through the process of thematic analysis of a substantial body
of research, this dissertation underscores that childhood sexual abuse significantly
influences survivors' perceptions of parenting, attachment styles, and overall parental
behaviors. These effects are often manifested in challenges related to trust, emotional
regulation, and forming secure attachments with their children. The literature highlights
the necessity for trauma-informed practices among social workers to better support
parents with a history of childhood sexual abuse, ensuring a sensitive and effective
approach to addressing their unique needs.
Despite the comprehensive exploration of these impacts, there remains a notable gap in
the research concerning fathers who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. The
existing studies predominantly focus on mothers, thereby overlooking the specific
experiences and challenges faced by male survivors in their parenting roles. This
dissertation advocates for more inclusive research that addresses this gap.
Furthermore, the co-occurrence of childhood sexual abuse with other forms of childhood
trauma complicates the ability to isolate its specific effects. This overlap necessitates
further research to delineate the distinct consequences of childhood sexual abuse on
parenting. By addressing these gaps, future research can better inform clinical practices
and intervention strategies, ultimately enhancing support systems for all parents affected
by childhood sexual abuse.
