Abstract

The present paper aims to extend on previous research and fill gaps within current explorations on the relationship between COVID-19, sleep patterns and sleep mitigation strategies. Additionally, it aims to discover if sleep quality can be predicted by perceived stress, general anxiety and age. This was accomplished through 55 multigendered participants, who completed an online survey covering perceived stress, general anxiety, sleep quality and a range of open ended questions. Analysis of the data via a multiple regression and thematic analysis found that general anxiety was the most influential predictor of sleep quality. However, perceived stress and age did not have a significant relationship with sleep quality. The qualitative inquiry found that the lockdown proceedings due to COVID-19 was a causal factor behind negative sleep
pattern change. Individuals found it their sleep quality worsened, it was harder to fall asleep, experienced more sleep disturbances and excessive daytime fatigue. Mitigation strategies that reported the most success in alleviating negative sleep quality were relaxation techniques, physical activity, modifying sleep routine and medication. Results bring attention to the importance that anxiety and daily life structure has to sleep pattern and sleep quality. Further, that specific mitigation strategies can alleviate poor sleep quality. However, further investigation is required to explore the relationship that sleep mitigation strategies can have on improving sleep quality.
