Abstract
A critical discussion of Michael Haneke's 'The White Ribbon' in terms of its consideration of place and politics in regards to fanaticism and Nazism. The paper reflects on the tension between Haneke's claims for specificity and generality for the film and how these might occlude the political and aesthetic stakes of a consideration of Nazism and fanaticism.
