Abstract

Trans representation within the UK media and political discourse is a volatile topic with many contrasting and conflicting perspectives. This study aimed to develop an understanding of the narratives and concepts used within a variety of newspapers and political sources. The goal was to gather a wide variety of political and cultural perspectives within the discourse to get the full picture of how the trans community are typically framed. This is important to understand as how a minority group is framed within the communicative systems can directly impact how not only a society perceives them, but in the political front, can directly impact their lives through legislation and policy. The data for this study was collected through collecting a random sample that took articles from the most circulated newspapers within the UK as well as transcriptions from a variety of politicians who have spoken on this topic. These sources were then coded and analysed from a conceptual content analysis framework and using the theoretical work of both Stuart Hall and previous studies on the topic. The results of this process found that trans representation often frames the trans community as illegitimate and as a threat to women’s rights and safety. This was found due to the contrast in how the media framed their sources and the concepts they used to develop certain narratives. It also found however, that newspapers and politicians who were pro-trans typically followed similar patterns through how they framed anti-trans sources and discourse. Some other themes noted included legitimising indicators, validity and conflict. The themes and concepts found within trans representation indicate that there is a need for further research into the topic to allow for development of policy suggestions regarding media regulation in how they represent minority populations in order to hold them accountable.
