Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an 8-week golf specific thoracic flexibility program on driver ball speed and distance carried in recreational golfers. Sixteen recreational male golfers (26±9 years, 181±7cm, 82±8kg) with a 27±4 handicap volunteered to take part in the study. Participants were divided into two groups (of whom 8 belonged to the intervention group and 8 belonged to the control group). Left and right thoracic rotation, which was added together to create bilateral thoracic rotation as well as driver golf performance measured of ball speed and distance carried were measured before and after the 8-week program. Following the program, the intervention group saw a significant improvement compared to the controlled group in all variables (p<0.05). Bilateral thoracic rotation significantly improved (p<0.001) by 27±18 degrees compared to the controlled group who decreased by 1±0 degrees. Ball speed significantly improved (p=0.006) by 9±5mph compared to the control groups decrease of 1±5mph. Distance carried significantly improved (p=0.011) by 18±14 yards compared to the control groups decrease of 1±11 yards. The results of this study indicate that a solely based thoracic flexibility program will have a significant effect on thoracic rotational flexibility and driver golf performance measures of ball speed and distance carried in male recreational golfers.
