Abstract

This thesis explores in practice and research the connection between nomadism and the notions of ‘home’ and belonging. In order to identify a common language and movement vocabulary that can be established in a shared space, this practice-led-research employs an autoethnographic and practice-as-research methodology through the use of dance methods and vocabulary such as dance improvisation, writing tasks and discussions. Such tasks and the qualitative information gathered throughout the research will enable me to scrutinise and dismantle the blending of the preconceived notions of ‘home’ and ‘belonging’ tied together in relation to nomadism and the nomadic subject. Researcher and choreographer, Vida Midgelow (2012) and philosopher Rosi Braidotti’s (1994) writing on nomadism is useful in positioning my own sense of belonging. I will also analyse writing by researcher Vanessa May (2013), and French philosopher Gaston Bachelard (1994) to gain a better understanding of the concepts of belonging and self (May), and the phenomenology of home and its physical geographical location (Bachelard). Drawing from these is the creation of Displaced (Madore, 2022) and shades of belonging (Madore, 2022) which accompanies my research.
