Abstract

The dominance of podium winning sports in the UK is well documented, funded, and highlighted to the sporting world. However, little research has investigated the current funding issue in relation to minority sports that previously have not been considered podium sports. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the extent to which funding is a factor in creating world sporting success, and how those that do not receive funding are at a disadvantage. Twelve semi structured interviews with participants who are of elite level at Artistic Gymnastics or Olympic Weight Lifting were conducted in order to establish the contributing factors to success, and the impacts mentally and physically on those athletes that are struggling to sustain funding. The findings suggested that the opportunity to compete alongside international athletes was impacted heavily by the amount of funding the athlete’s received. Athletes did not feel on a level playing field, and described the unfair advantage their competitors had over them; with more financial benefits, time, rehab and preparation. As a result, the study makes recommendations for future study in regards to the funding of elite performers across a wider range of sports
