Abstract

This study observed transformational leadership behaviours exhibited by football managers in a university setting. An adapted 31-Item Differentiated Transformational Leadership Inventory (DTLI) questionnaire was completed by 60 footballers, who regularly represent The University of Chichester in BUCS competition. Following this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 6 players, 2 from each of the top 3 teams who scored their manager highest on the DTLI. The answers provided by the players were analysed based upon the facets of the DTLI. Results indicated that the university 4th team manager in fact exhibited the largest quantity of transformational behaviours of each of the five teams examined. The study highlights the positive impact transformational leadership can have on a university football team’s sporting performance through the means of; Individual Consideration, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, Fostering Acceptance of Group Goals, High Performance Expectations and Appropriate Role Modelling.
