The Pan’s People Papers was created with choreographer Lea Anderson in 2015 and responded to the archive of Flick Colby, Pan’s People, the emerging Jimmy Savile scandal and his subsequent disappearance from the BBC public archives. The research had four iterations: 1. The creation of a story world for an interactive Transmedia 3 day event live across Facebook and Twitter. Audiences followed characters notifications, including two screendance reconstructions of Colby’s ‘You Little Trustmaker’ and 29 original screendances and animations. 2. An archival website platform. 3. Impact activities: public discussions in the UK, Ireland and the USA. 4. Academic conference presentations and a contextual essay Glamour and Salvage. This writing explores 1970s televisual technologies at the BBC including vision mixing and specially designed lenses, proposing that they were part of a bigger kind of glamour spell involving young women and men in power that can be traced back to Greek myth and Pan (Anne Emanuelle Berger: 1996) (Robert Graves: 1955).

The project is positioned as a form of ‘cultural enquiry’ into Savile and Colby’s work. Anderson led on the reconstructions using a concept of ‘correcting’ screen documents (Edits:Anderson: 2014), the body in this project is a technology for retrieving information that might be ‘lost’ in what are considered incomplete screen documentations. The process of ‘correction’ resulted in other strategies such as casting across gender and ethnicity. Zanotti led on the screen work, creating and editing the animations and directing the two screedance reconstruction and in the writing and direction of the Transmedia context and website platform. This element explored how the project might work strategically as a series of covert interventions into social media platforms responding critically to gaps in institutional (BBC) and publicly maintained (Youtube) archives. The project was an early example of a Transmedia dance project, flagged up by ACE as best practice in the area of audience engagement and installed by the Mozilla foundation as part of an event on EU Copyright Law.
