Abstract
Social isolation and poor mental health are increasing concerns among older adults with the UK’s ageing population. This study explored the role of community sport in reducing social isolation and improving mental health in older adults aged 60 and over in Chichester, West Sussex. A qualitative research method was adopted, using semi-structured interviews for community sport practitioners and focus groups involving older adults who participate in the programmes. The findings explain that community sport has a significant role in building social connections, reducing loneliness and improving confidence. Participants highlight the importance of friendship and inclusive environments in promoting both mental and social benefits. However barriers such as physical limitations, low confidence levels and accessibility issues were identified as common challenges to participation. Overall, the research demonstrates that community sport provides physical, social and mental health benefits for older adults over the age of 60. Recommendations include improving community sport accessibility, enhancing staff training in mental health and adapting sports sessions to meet the needs of a wider community.
