Abstract

Before implementing immersive technologies for testing or training perceptual-cognitive skill, there is a need to establish if performance compares with on-field measures. This study assessed the level of agreement between scan frequency and scan timing measured in a medium sided soccer game (7v7) in 360-video compared to the same sided game on-field. Twelve female outfield players (19.7 ± 1.2 years) viewed 20 trials in 360-video standing in central defensive and attacking midfield and participated in a 60-minute on-field game. VEA was measured by the number of ‘scans’ away from the ball in 360-video and the on-field game. 360 video and on field overall mean scan frequency showed minimal systematic bias, with a small mean difference, –0.008 scans/s (95% CI: –0.066 to 0.050), indicating good agreement. Exploratory analysis showed a significant interaction between condition and scan timing window for mean scan frequency F(4, 44) = 5.776, p < 0.001, η²ₚ = 0.344 with significant differences between 360-video and on-field at the ball contact – 1 second scan timing window. Findings show promise for using 360-video as an off-field tool to measure VEA, however future work with larger and more diverse samples is needed to better understand agreement between 360-video and on-field performance.
