Abstract
This research investigates the emotional and social impacts of fundraising events. The research draws on examples of UK based fundraising events held over the past five years. These events, which range from fun runs to wedding fairs, can serve not only as sources of income but also as platforms for emotional connection and social interaction.
It explores how individuals who participate in or support these events often experience strong emotional engagement, including feelings of empathy, gratitude, and fulfilment. These emotional responses contribute to a deeper sense of personal investment.
At the same time, the events can provide opportunities for social bonding and the development of wider community ties helping to create both bonding capital (connections among similar individuals) and bridging capital (connections across different groups) (Putnam, 2000).
The research draws on key theoretical frameworks such as the Warm Glow Theory (Andreoni, 1990), the Engagement Marketing Theory (Schmitt, 1999), and the Social Capital Theory (Putnam, 2000) to interpret findings from primary data and testimonials.
Emotional resonance was found to be a significant motivator for continued involvement, while social elements such as shared experiences and community recognition strengthened group cohesion and local support.
Overall, the findings highlight that fundraising events not only generate income but also create lasting social and emotional impacts. The research concludes with a series of actionable recommendations aimed at helping St Wilfrid’s Hospice strengthen these positive effects in its future events.
