Abstract
This case study examines the shift from traditional active commuting methods to car
transportation among UK primary school children, focusing on its effects on physical activity,
health, financial implications, and parental time perceptions. Employing a mixed-methods
approach, the study integrates a comprehensive literature review with primary research
that includes an online questionnaire, direct observations during school drop-off and pickup times, and interviews with parents The research aims to uncover the reasons parents opt
for car use over walking or cycling, such as perceived time savings and the economic
considerations of commuting costs. It also explores effective strategies to encourage a shift
back to more active commuting methods. The findings are expected to highlight the health
impacts of reduced physical activity, assess the financial burden on families associated with
car use, and elucidate how parental perceptions of time influence commuting choices.
These insights are intended to guide policymakers and educational leaders in promoting
healthier and more cost-effective commuting practices for primary school children in the
UK.
