Abstract
This research project aimed to investigate professional viewpoints of working in partnership with parents of children with SEND (special educational needs and disabilities). The research consisted of viewpoints from teachers, leadership staff and the SENCo and was conducted using interviews, questionnaires, document scrutiny and field notes. The research identified that professionals perceive working with parents of children with SEND as an unequal partnership, with differing opinions on the expectations of parents. Professionals also experienced a variety of factors that inhibit effective partnership working from both parents and their own role within the partnership. Research also identified the lack of inclusion of fathers within the partnership and as a result, the research concludes that there is a need for clearly defined partnership working alongside professional training and fostering the inclusion of fathers.
