Abstract

Background: Workplace musculoskeletal disorders have been investigated in a wide range of occupations including chefs, housekeeping and office workers. There is little available research regarding musculoskeletal symptom prevalence in the whole body in employees of the hospitality industry, including comparison of different departments. Objectives: To understand and identify if there is an association between hospitality work type and prevalence of location of musculoskeletal symptoms. Methods: An online version of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) via Microsoft Forms was administered to employees of three different hospitality venues. Participants reported location, frequency and severity of symptoms in the last 12 months. Employees were split by workload groups; Strenuous (Kitchen and Housekeeping staff), Active (Bar, Waiting and Childrens Play Area staff) and Sedentary (Receptionists and Management). Results: Among 127 employees, 66 participated within the study. Strenuous work group reported a high prevalence of complaints in Hand/Wrist (80%), Shoulder (75%) and Lower Back (55%). Active included Lower Back (72.73%), Shoulder (63.64%) and Ankle/Feet (59.09%). Sedentary included Lower Back (62.5%), Shoulder (45.83%) and Neck (41.67%) symptoms. Within the total participants, Lower Back symptoms had been reported the most frequently (63.64%), Conclusions: Increased workload, and the absence of sedentary behaviour, could suggest an association of increased location prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms.
