Abstract
The following research project aimed to investigate teachers understanding of race in the primary classroom and how teachers’ confidence levels, perceptions and existing curriculum opportunities, impact how and to what extent they address race. A small-scale case study was undertaken to explore Teachers’ understanding of race in the primary classroom through the use of questionnaires, interviews, and a planning scrutiny. The research found whilst teachers identified as moderately confident when addressing race, the effectiveness of teachers’ ITT (Initial Teacher Training), curriculum expectations, and insufficient in-service training were identified as barriers to its inclusion in primary education. Furthermore, it was evident teachers’ perceptions of race impacted their practice. The research concludes by highlighting the importance of effective ITT and CPD regarding educational provision about race in education to ensure teachers’ preparedness to address race in the primary classroom.
