Abstract
Swansea City Football Club’s historic rise to the English Premier League coincided with the evolution to the digital age where people have access to information instantaneously. With this, came the growth in popularity of social media platforms. After spending seven seasons in the English Premier League, the Swans gained a massive worldwide following which translated to social media followers. Having settled back into life in the Championship, Swansea City is home to a media team that has earned plaudits for its social media output. With unique ideas and relatable content, the Swans have become trend setters in the second tier.
Following relegation from the English Premier League in 2018, the Swans were back in the Championship for the first time in seven years. A lot had changed in that time and with ever-changing broadcast rights, the Championship now allowed its clubs to broadcast their own fixtures to their fans. Rather than using the EFL’s iFollow service, Swansea City saw an opportunity to take their broadcasting in house to create a high-quality product on a small budget for their worldwide fanbase following their time in the English Premier League. After extensive planning and research ahead of their first season back in the second tier, the Swans now had their own streaming subscription platform with Swans TV.
