Abstract
The impact of Ramadan on Muslim athletes is an area lacking qualitative research. Studies conducted thus far have mainly focused on performance and has been conducted in Muslim majority countries. The current study looked to build on previous research by examining the experiences of Muslim athletes using the socio-ecological model in a non-Muslim majority country. Using a narrative analysis, adopting a social constructionist and relativist approach was deemed appropriate, specifically a structural analysis was used. The final sample compiled of four participants, three who had played football and one who played rugby at an amateur or semi-professional level. Examining each story, the restitution narrative provided an overall structure with elements of the performance and chaos narratives, these differed in intensity between the participants. Whilst there were some similarities between previous research and the current study regarding intrapersonal, interpersonal and institutional factors, on a community level, the participants were independent and did not rely on others. Only one participant was aware of policy level support. To address sampling issues in this study, future research can explore the experiences of a greater variety of Muslim athletes.
