In this essay I reflect on a tree-sound-walk workshop led collaboratively by the walking artist Rosie Montford, dancer and dance scholar Leslie Satin (New York University, Gallatin) and myself as part of the Museum of Walking’s ‘Sound-Walk Sunday’ programme (Sept 1st 2019). The on-line based Museum of Walking is an initiative led by walking curator, author and pod cast innovator Andrew Stuck and Sound Walk Sunday is an annual volunteer-led event in which a series of walks take place nationally and internationally. The events have a shared interest in drawing attention to space and place through walking, listening and responding to sounds encountered en route. The ‘Dancing / Walking with Trees’ workshop extended the sound walk format to incorporate movement, drawing and dance activities alongside listening as modes of doing and thinking that might bring individuals closer to an awareness of environmental features. Starting from the University campus, participants followed a section of the Chichester ‘tree trail’ route and engaged with a series of tasks involving drawing, moving, pausing and reflecting on experiences, sights and sounds gathered along the way.
