Abstract

The premise of this study was to review and analyse the goal kicks taken in both women’s and men’s elite level football. After collecting data from a total of 16 matches, eight in the Women’s Super League (WSL) and eight in the Barclays Premier League (BPL), the final outcomes from each goal kick provided an insight to whether they were seen as more successful, or unsuccessful, for the team with the ball. With the assistance from various studies, this supported the research and gave guidance on positive steps when analysing and collecting data. The analysis used a hand notational system which also included abbreviations to aid in the simplicity of the study. This resulted in multiple tables and figures to be complied, which included statistics and percentages on the results found in the 16 selected football matches. Information such as; the total number of goal kicks throughout each set of eight games and the sum of all the outcomes from all 271 goal kicks that were recorded. The underpinning reason for this study was to ascertain whether or not goal kicks are seen as more of a positive or a negative in football, or if the results differed between each league.
