This article considers the life and career of the multi-instrumentalist Mr Charles (fl.1733-1757). As a French horn, clarinet, chalumeau and oboe d'amore player, Mr Charles was particularly significant in promoting these novel sound worlds, which he combined in concert with the presentation of ‘curiosities’ such as female and black French horn players.
In discussing Mr Charles’s extensive career, contemporary concert culture is examined, highlighting the rapid development of public concerts and concert series in different centres. This study therefore explores musical life in London and the provinces, as viewed through the career of this eighteenth-century professional musician.
