Abstract
A short story set in Russia in 1943, following an eighteen year old woman on her first mission with the all-female 46th Taman Guards Night Bomber Regiment. We learn about her home life and her family, as well as her fears of being forgotten, and her lack of confidence. The story shows her personal growth and her complicated and conflicted thoughts towards war and violence.
A Heaven Within Hell:
An essay detailing and discussing the presence of beauty and wonder within war narratives. It discusses the novels The Book Thief and Fly Away Peter, as well as the non-fiction collection of accounts in The Unwomanly Face of War. The essay discusses how more traditional connections between beauty and warfare contrast with more contemporary depictions, and also explores the related difficulties facing a writer in this field. Furthermore, it connects to wider literature and to the above creative piece.
