Abstract

The Offences Against the Person Act 1861 created the offence of ‘unlawful procurement’ of a miscarriage, punishable by ‘penal servitude’. The introduction of the Abortion Act 1967 brought with it a list of grounds under which lawful abortions could be carried out, along with several other regulations surrounding abortion services. This dissertation explores the ways in which the legislation has affected people, procedure and place within the provision of abortion and critically analyses the changes in which the Abortion Act 1967 has undergone since it came into effect, almost 60 years ago.
