Abstract
This article addresses the controversy surrounding Jon Stewart's accusation of anti-Semitism against J. K. Rowling. It examines Rowling's use of mythic and folklore figures and discusses the use of those figures in other texts as encoding for religious and other minority groups. It also considers Tolkien's employment of dwarves and Gollum as encoding for Jews.
