Abstract
Education is seen as an activity that wholly encompasses society and concerns not only schools, teachers and pupils but also the social institutions that have at different times shaped it. In order to form a complete history of education it would have to take into account educational development and its relationship with the church, the state and social and political movements of every kind. It must also take into account the changing social patterns of social stratification, family and population structure.
