Our project examined the reciprocal interactions between a real-live measurement and sonification of the participants' cardiac behavior, and the participants’ movement responses to the resulting audio stimuli. We were interested in the effects and implications of externalising some of the otherwise unobservable and self-referential processes of sensing (e.g. listening to the heartbeat, focusing on the breath, attending to internal micromovements) which appear in somatic movement practices, through technology-based augmentation; our project realises this by sonifying a live-feed of the participants’ pulse through a generative modular programming environment, enabling the producer (or owner) of that measurement to react to and engage with the mediated sounds of their own heart. Many models of somatic movement practices are associated with listening to one’s own body, and reacting to that self-referential sensation through movement. In such practices, the practitioners’ movements then affect the source of the sensation itself – whether it be breath, heartbeat or otherwise – which causes a cyclical relationship between sensation and action. While our research direction primarily sees the externalisation of self-generated sensations as a type of methodology which could uncover some of the phenomenological properties of this cyclical process, we also hoped to encounter some critical discussions on the implication of sensory mediation during this open intervention. In addition to topics surrounding the idea of mediated versus un-mediated (or pure) self-sensing, we also invited practical/technical discussions on the process of mediating physiological measurements.
