Zanotti, M. (2006) Edges 2. [Shows/Exhibitions]
Full text not available from this repository.Abstract
'Edges 2' is an improvisational structure for four performers exploring themes of edge, disruption and the frame. Investigating performance and screenwork through choreographic strategies employed in 'San Diego' (2003) and using closed improvisational scores, with very limited variables, vocabularies were created in a spatial exploration of the concepts of 'edge', action and emotion with reference to slapstick and magic routines. Using cameras and projection, I created gaps/edges across two spaces. A fixed camera projecting onto a screen behind the audience creates a field in which two lead performers move. I directed the other two performers to copy the lead performers' movements captured on screen by the camera. The action on screen is therefore mediated through the copiers' bodies. Sometimes the screen is empty of performers and the copiers must choose how to occupy this time. This generates a space of 'not knowing' for both audience and performers: a third space that draws attention to the gaps in performance, to that which is seen and not done, but which is imagined.
