Abstract

Yael Flexer choreographed 'Exit Plan', a middle-scale performance for 10 dancers and site-specific video installation, with Nic Sandiland. Commissioned by E-Werk International Dance Festival and Bewegungs Arts, Germany, 'Exit Plan' was performed/installed in the foyer area, and theatre 'in the round' with audience seated at ground level. 'Exit Plan' investigated the reconfiguration of theatrical space and audience/performer interaction as a means of engendering and interrogating intimacy. Installations and performers explored interaction with audience members through physical touch, eye contact, movement improvisation, whispering and text. They re-interrogated Woodhouse's notion of revealing viewers or 'placing the audience in the light' (2005) by shifting the audience back and forth between direct participation and response, and a more conventional, passive role in the same event. Created by an Israeli Jewish choreographer in collaboration with a cast of Swiss and German performers from East and West Germany, the work investigated issues of identity, nationality and affiliation. Performers wove personal narratives with memories of key historical events (in particular the falling of the Berlin Wall) into the work, while performance images alluded to the Holocaust. This resonated particularly with German audiences. The work connected intimacy with notions of personal/cultural boundary crossings, through textual and metaphoric references and the reconfiguration of theatrical space, positioning viewers as witnesses (Etchells, 1999).
