Entangled: A film imaging Bell’s Theorem and responding to a classical music score. The film was commissioned by composer Matthew Whiteside as part of a project with the Institute of Physics.

Entangled: Imaging in the live performance of contemporary electro acoustic scores often employs existing software or original coding to generate visual components correlating to key aspects of sound such as volume and frequency,this means that the moving image can feel like a visual demonstration of the music. This research conceives of a visualisation as related to the score but also operating independently; a visual technology for listening. The collaborative process was defined as follows: The score was written in advance of the moving image work by Whiteside who identified three themes of quantum entanglement. Zanotti then led the research process that was driven by three questions. How might existing paradigms of imaging Bell’s Theorem be re-imagined poetically using a choreographic methodology? How might new affects be created through editing when the first element being considered in a moving image work is not looking but listening? How might a film operate as a technology for listening? The research can be contextualised in relation to existing visualisations of Bell’s theorem and recent work in archival projects imaging contemporary music scores Bill Morrisson’s (Decasia, 2002) and archival screen choreographies (Davies:2012 ).

Screened on February 15th 2018 as the opening event of The NI Science Festival with live string quartet alongside The John Bell Lecture by Professor Winfried Hensinger on applications of quantum physics. Entangled won the Lightmoves International Screedance Festival award for Innovative Use of Sound (11th November 2018)
