Abstract

A discussion of how the Cottingley fairy photographs fit into a well established cultural motif of nineteenth and early-twentieth century children's literature involving children playing at the bottom of the garden, or just beyond the hedge boundary, with fairies. The blog traces how this motif intersected with academic folkloric studies of fairy-lore and considers how the Cottingley photographs ultimately contributed to the decline of the serious folkloric fairy into a childish flower fairy.
