Abstract

The aim of the research project is to investigate the effectiveness of sensory materials and examine how they can be used to support children’s emotional well-being, from a play therapist’s perspective. Supporting children’s emotional well-being is paramount, particularly in relation to the development of mental health difficulties in old age. The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked a large concern over the well-being of children, which further highlights the importance of supporting their emotional well-being (WHO, 2021). This research project will aim to discuss and investigate what emotional well-being is, how it can be impacted and how play therapists use sensory materials to support it.
A qualitative approach was the chosen methodology of the research project and the data was collected through using virtual semi -structured interviews. The literature review is separated into sections that interlink and relate to the research question. The data is analysed through using coding and thematic analysis, producing in depth and detailed answers that can be used to support and answer the research question. The research offers a small-scale insight into the therapeutic benefits and challenges of sensory materials and analyses how they can be used to support children’s emotional well-being. The main findings of the research demonstrate the significance of sensory materials and how play therapists advocate and use them daily to support children’s emotional well-being. All participants advocate the use of sensory materials and many suggest that they are a vital part of a play therapists tool kit. Additionally, the research project proposes that further research is necessary to educate all parents and professionals on the importance of sensory materials and how they can be used to support children’s emotional well-being.
