Abstract
This study aimed to examine how teaching professionals working in military towns viewed gun play.
The study was thematically introduced appraising literature from a number of researchers and
theorists. The themes discussed included “Gun Play in the early years”, “Play Theories”, “Imitation
Play”, “Practitioners views on gun play” and “Media Influence”. Within each theme the literature was
evaluated and discussed in relation to gun play. The Research was conducted using a qualitative
research methodology and semi-structured interviews which focussed on asking questions derived
from the themes uncovered in the literature review. The main findings showed that four of the five
participants did not agree with gun play and felt that it was not beneficial for children to engage in
this type of play. The research found that these participants imposed their own views of gun play onto
the children stopping them from engaging in gun play often using the rights of the child to justify
stopping the play so the children did not get hurt. An interesting theme to emerge from the research
was how much of an influence practitioners have on child led play. It concluded that despite the
amount of research evidence discussing the benefits of gun play, it is ultimately the practitioner who
will determine if children are allowed to engage in gun play within settings. It suggests therefore that
children in some settings are not allowed to lead their own play despite this being the main focus of
the Early Years Foundation Stage.
