Abstract

Value for money can be determined in different ways from person to person with the football world being no exception. This study examines the value for money that fans experience throughout a matchday experience. To conduct this study, mixed methods (both quantitative and qualitative) were used through a questionnaire of 40 participants with 20 participants at Elite Level games and 20 participants at Non - League level games determining key themes for reasons behind why fans attend matchdays across the football spectrum. Through both primary and secondary data collection key themes occurred allowing a development in the research area. The first theme discovers the impact of surroundings within a matchday such as the atmosphere within the ground. The second theme discovers the social impacts that influence matchday support by fans at both levels of the game. The third theme looks at the different view's fans have on the different levels of talent on show and the impact that it has on attendance and value for money when comparing cost of tickets and the standard of football being watched. This leads to the final theme of cost. This investigates different expenditure of fans during a matchday through merchandise at the ground and allows a comparison between the levels of football. Within all themes, value for money is discussed and explored within what makes the football fan experience deemed value for money. The outcome concluded that aspects of previous literature identified did match the results of the study. However, some details could be explored in depth in future around the topic area.
