Abstract

The purpose of this study was two-fold: firstly, the aim was to evaluate whether the introduction of the new goal kick rule produced the desired outcome (i.e. to prompt a quicker restart of the game). Secondly, a tactical analysis of goal kick’s setup and implementation was conducted to investigate how the new rule modification influenced teams’ strategies. To do so, a unique performance analysis system was designed and within- and between-observer agreement was tested to promote the reliability and validity of the study. 1507 goal kick actions from English Premier League seasons 18-19 and 19-20 were analysed with SportsCode. A paired sample t-test and two one-way ANOVAs (p< .05) were conducted to evaluate interruption duration. Loglinear analysis and Chi-Square Goodness of Fit were used for the tactical analysis. The findings of this study are arguably of great interest not only for football governing bodies, for the exploration of time-wasting strategies with the new goal kick law, but also to coaches and practitioners, as critical insights into teams’ behaviours and patterns of play emerged from the tactical analysis.
