Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyse corner kicks with specific reference to the difference in off-the-ball movements between the top 3 and bottom 3 Premier League teams based on corner success in the 2018-2019 season. The sample included teams 1-3 and 18-20 based on goal
scoring from corner kicks; a total of 1,032 corner kicks were analysed which included a total of 39 goals scored. Analysis consisted of a Chi-Square Test of Independence to analyse all variables with regards to team rank, as well as log-linear analysis to explore trends between the variation of strategies used and outcomes achieved. Results showed a stronger significant association between team rank and delivery direction, delivery zone, attacking numbers, defending numbers, defensive pressure and corner outcome (p<0.0001) than team rank and delivery type and first contact (p<0.05). Player movements from goal scoring corners indicated the top 3 teams utilised a wider variety of movement strategies, including different directions and types. As well as indicating a much more structured approach to off the ball movements of all players in successful corner scenarios. Overall, findings from the study have shown that the most successful delivery type is deliveries to the far post more predominately in Zone’s 13, 12 or 11, in order to keep the ball away from goal keeper interaction and to increase the chances of a successful outcome. It is important teams apply a large number of attacking players to the targeted area, so first contact is more likely as well as making the team well drilled in utilising a variation of movement types so to create medium – low defensive pressure on attacking players.
