Abstract

Despite being a team sport, a football team is made up of eleven individuals whom play in specific positions depending on their attributes. Each playing position requires the
performance of particular actions in order to meet the specific requirements of that positional role. This study therefor investigated the influence that match location and quality of opposition had on the playing positions that made up a football team in the English Football League Championship. Data was collected for all 46 of their games Championship games and player specific information was categorised in terms of playing position, match location and opposition quality. For each playing position a group of action variables were specifically assigned in accordance with the positional requirements. A series of independent samples t-tests were used to compare the means of match actions performed by relative positional profiles during the season in different match locations and against different levels of opposition in terms of quality. Results indicated that centre backs were most influenced by match location achieving 3 significant (P=>0.05) results during home performances. Due to lack of significant results it was not possible to determine that either of the situational variables had an influence on any of the playing positions. Despite this there was a large bias towards home performances with 5 out of the 7 playing positions favouring playing at home with regards to higher averages being achieved at home. Contrary to previous research, 4 out of 7 playing positions achieved better results on average playing against top ranked opposition. Future research should consider increasing the sample size and match actions of the playing positions. As well as this, taking into consideration match outcome could add greater context to the findings and in turn practical value.
