Abstract

In this revised and updated chapter I return to some basic principles and ideas and focus on what might be considered as an introductory or ‘first-step’ approach to planning and making site-dance work through experiencing space and introducing strategies for scrutinizing spatial experiences and considering how we encounter space and place. The chapter draws on fundamental spatial theories and ideas from theorists whose work is considered as seminal in this sphere. It is an introduction to making, conceiving and evaluating site-specific dance work and provides a grounding from which more complex and diverse approaches to engaging with space and place (such as those encompassed in my edited volume 'Moving Sites') might be explored. The concerns of this chapter remain, to introduce students, practitioners and dance scholars to selected spatial theorists whose work lends itself to application within this field of choreography and to consider the implications of such spatialised notions and practices for site-dance making.
