Abstract

The current study aimed to examine whether the French national team has altered their style of play in the offensive phase by analysing the last six world cups they participated in. The sample size (n = 12) consisted of two games per competition. The study assessed two variables separately (skill-based and style of play key performance indicators) and compared together through the use of the dependent variables t-test. The skill-based variable included six key performance indicators (KPIs): passes, passes per shot, dribbles, shots, crosses and goals, with the style of play variable consisting of four KPIs: runs, movement off the ball, pitch use and patterns of play. The idea behind using these two variables was to provide context to the skill based KPIs, adding onto previous performance analysis research. Calculations based on the t-test indicated that France have not altered their general style of play with minor adjustments on one of the style of play KPIs (movement off the ball). To identify the play style France have adopted, both the skill-based and style of play variables were grouped, and percentages were calculated. Thus, results show that France have adopted a direct play style irrespective of the coaching staff or players involved.
