Abstract

The aim of this research investigation is to determine a try scoring profile for the
Tyrrell’s Premier 15’s (TP15) during the 2018/19 regular season. The investigator analysed 72 games that took place in 2018/19 TP15’s season. The TP15’s league consists of 10 competing teams in England. Six of these teams were included within this investigation with four teams excluded based upon the inclusion criterion.
The research study determined a try scoring profile for the league based upon the individual try scoring ability of the six teams investigated. Six key try scoring variables were analysed; Possession Type (Lineout, Scrum, Restart, Turnover, Tap and Kick Return),
Possession Origin (TL-22, 22-HW, HW-22, 22-TL), Final Phase Origin (TL-22, 22-HW, HW-22, 22-TL), Match Period (1st period, 2nd Period, 3rd Period and 4th Period), Player Position and Number of Phases. Of the variables analysed Match Period was the only variable that didn’t have a significant association with any other variable. The following variables were all found to have significant differences - Possession Type (p < 0.0001), Possession Origin (p < 0.0001), Final Phase Origin (p < 0.0001), Number of Phases (p < 0.0001) and Player Position (p < 0.0001).
The results of this investigation outline the manner in which the top six teams within the TP15’s scored tries during the 2018/19 season and how key variables associated to others.
