Abstract

McGill (2017) discusses the importance of assessment for learning questioning techniques as to help lessons move from good to outstanding. These also help teachers to address differentiation in the classroom and encourages teachers to task risks.
This project is a small-scale research project exploring the use of ranging styles of questioning to maximise pupil engagement in a secondary school setting in Portsmouth, which for confidentiality reasons will remain anonymous. There is a huge range in experience of the teachers who work at the school, which arrays from newly-qualified to 30 years; meaning a variety in the use of their questioning techniques. I will be focusing on how they deploy these techniques across lessons, with a focus in Mathematics but also visiting other subjects to use as a comparison. The main focus is on how engaged the students become in the lesson through being asked questions.
The opening chapter of this project discusses current research in this area of education and a summary of those has been given throughout the chapter. I have chosen to focus upon three themes which stood out during further reading and these have been split into sections to ensure all ideas are clear. Chapter 2 focuses on the methodology used to carry out the research. I discuss both advantages and disadvantages to the chosen methods and how these could have impacted my research. Chapter 3 focuses on my findings. I have analysed these and drawn them back to the previous research. The final chapter discusses the conclusions I have drawn from my research project from which I have evaluated the project, alongside some recommendations for future research.
