Abstract

This dissertation will aim to explore three plays from the European Early Modern period dramatising Henry VIII's reign. I will explore the varying representations within two English plays and one Spanish play. In each play, I will argue that its playwright shaped the events of history in favour of their royal patron. In the first chapter, I will explore Samuel Rowley's representation of Prince Edward in When You See Me, You Know Me, and argue that within this character Rowley mirrors the real Prince Henry Frederick, James I's son. This play conveys Catholicism negatively in order to highlight the superiority of Protestantism. In the second chapter, I will examine William Shakespeare and John Fletcher's choice to present a subtler version of religious controversy in King Henry VIII. I will argue that the balance between positive portrayals of the Catholic Katherine of Aragon and the Protestant Anne Boleyn serve to respect James I's strive for peace between Spain and England. In the third and final chapter, I will study the rise and fall of Anne Boleyn, portrayed negatively by Pedro Calderón de le Barca in La cisma de Inglaterra, in order to honour Philip IV of Spain's status as defender of the Catholic faith.
