The intention of this study is to deconstruct and contextually analysis the filmic representations of gender, sexuality and identity in the femme fatale. With particular reference to Barbara Creed’s The Monstrous Feminine: Film, Feminism, Psychoanalysis (1993), this study will examine the construction of the femme fatale’s identity, by exploring her relationship to genre and narrative throughout cinema, and discuss the ideological discourses of these representations. With an emphasis on feminist, psychoanalytical, post-structuralist and semiotic readings, this study will investigate the evolution of the filmic femme fatale through her defiance of heteronormativity and patriarchal oppression in silent cinema and film noir; her transgressive development into the erotic thrillers of the 1980/90s, and the destructive triad of power, aggression and sexuality; and finally, the morphology of the femme fatale into horror cinema, and the ideological difficulties of representing dominant woman as deadly and monstrous. This study’s findings have engaged with contemporary theorists and debates, by analytically questioning the characterisation of the femme fatale in film efficiently and insightfully, without relying on her passé archetype.
