The use of Taurine in energy drinks is wide spread across the market. Caffeine is well known for its positive effects on the performance of an individual both physically and mentally but there is less research on other ingredients used in energy drinks, specifically Taurine. This study aims to understand Taurine’s effects on cognition, focusing on reaction time whilst the participants are under the effects of hypoxia (altitude). A double blind, placebo controlled, matched pairs group design was used. 12 participants undertook the Eriksen Flanker task, in a hypoxic environment. There was a significant reduction in the arterial SpO2 readings within 5 minutes of hypoxia (F3,30=17.905, p<0.0005). Altitude and Taurine did not have a significant effect on heart rate or reaction time. Taurine was found to reduce Standard Deviation and decrease the number of errors. Overall findings suggest that the participants were not under the influence of altitude for long enough and Taurine did increase accuracy of the participants.
