Abstract

The research project aimed to investigate if group discussion had the potential to
enhance children’s learning in science. A focus group of year four children were
investigated via observations and interviews, before and after an intervention. The
research found that group discussion does have the potential to develop science
learning because children were extending each other’s thinking and developing their
understandings. However, it highlights the importance of interventions before
children are to engage in group discussions. Finally, a series of interventions are
recommended so that children’s talk can gradually be developed to a high level.
