The purpose of this study was to investigate in to whether a change in parental and peer influence occurs as a child transitions through the key stages. In order to establish whether a change occurs, eighty-eight participants were selected to take part within the study. One class of key stage one, one class of key stage two and twelve purposefully selected pupils from key stage three (year seven and nine) and key stage four. Participants in key stage one and two were interviewed using the concept of Draw-and-Tell Conversations (Driessnack, 2009) in which participants illustrated themselves participating PA with someone they enjoyed to do it with. Once all drawings were completed each participant had a short discussion about what they had drawn and who they liked to partake in PA with. Participants in key stage three and four were selected using quota sampling and asked to participate in a group discussion comprising of a range of topical areas established by previous research. Qualitative data was produced throughout the study and findings were categorised into intangible and tangible parental influences, parental barriers towards PA, positive and negative influences from peers, and the individuals own attitude towards PA. From this process findings established a change in influence as a child transitions through the key stages suggesting that parental influence declines during a child’s transition into adolescence. More importantly, findings suggest that the influence of peers plays a considerable role on children as young as five. Overall, the findings from this study indicate a change in influence throughout all key stages, however, the most considerable influence stemming from peers.
