Hamstring flexibility and leg power are both important aspects of performance for any footballer. Football players are required to carry out a range of dynamic movements for which flexibility is a key component of fitness. Power is also a key component of performance, needed for activities such as striking the ball. The aim of the study was to examine the effects of increased hamstring flexibility on leg power in male footballers. It was hypothesised that an increase in hamstring flexibility would result in an increased power output. Seven male footballers, who had not experienced any hamstring injuries within the past six months participated in the study. Participants completed in a three week stretching programme that involved static and dynamic stretches. Measures for flexibility and power were completed prior to and after the participants underwent a stretching programme. Flexibility was measured using a passive 90/90 test in which a goniometer was used to measure the angle at the knee. Power was measured using a Cybex machine using a programme of isokinetic contraction of 60° per second. Participants were also assessed in maximum ball speed following a strike of the ball. The results obtained from the study showed that hamstring flexibility, leg power and speed of the ball all significantly increased after the stretching programme [(t(6)= -3.649, p < 0.05), (z= -2.366, p < 0.05), (t(6)= -3.964, p < 0.05) respectively]. No significant correlation was found between hamstring flexibility and leg power for either pre testing (-0.414, p> 0.05) or post testing (-0.693, p>0.05). Significant correlations were obtained between leg power and speed during post stretching programme testing (0.872, p< 0.05). It was concluded that a higher degree of flexibility resulted in a lower leg power output. Further study is needed to determine whether simultaneous training for both flexibility and power will allow for an improved performance in both areas, without displaying the negative relationship.
