Abstract

Zero hour contracts (ZHCs) have attracted considerable attention from the
British media and politicians in recent times. Their use by employers has been at
record levels and they have been sensationalised as a means for some of the
largest employers, many of whom are household names to engage people on an
ad hoc basis without providing any ongoing commitment to their employment
hours.
This study was undertaken as the researcher had developed an interest in ZHCs
not only from their increased exposure in the press but also from personal
experience. The organisation chosen for the study has used ZHCs at a minimal /
modest level in the past and the researcher has explored whether it was
appropriate to maintain this level of use or increase it if there was going to be a
benefit to the business going forwards.
