Abstract

‘A Croat and a Pole created American history in Paris thanks to an Englishman.’
2 So said
Steven Spurrier on the fortieth anniversary of a wine tasting in Paris, which has become
known as the Judgement of Paris, forthwith to be referred to as the JOP.
The event, organised by Spurrier and was held on May 24th1976 is regarded as a defining
moment for the wine industry. Californian wines were judged better than French by an all
French panel of judges. By examining each country’s wine industry and drinking culture, the
question of whether this was a defining moment for them will be addressed.
