Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of statistical and video feedback on the reflective practices and teaching behaviours of Secondary School Physical Education teachers. The Coach Analysis and Intervention System (CAIS) was utilised to identify teaching behaviours, pre and post teaching intervention. The teaching intervention consisted of a semi-structured interview in which the teachers reviewed video footage and observational data from their lessons. Following the interview, the teachers were also given access to the videos and observational data. A total of 18 lessons were filmed with each teacher being filmed six times with an average duration of M = 35.3 minutes. The results of the CAIS demonstrated increased levels of questioning and praise following the teaching intervention. Teaching behaviours were found to change dependent upon the class and sport covered in lesson as well as unique individual factors. Follow up interviews highlighted that teachers valued the use of video and statistical feedback, enabling them to reflect upon teaching practices and implement any behaviour changes they felt necessary. The findings suggest that video feedback may help to improve teaching behaviours among Secondary School Physical Education teachers.
