Abstract

How primary PE and School Sport (PESS) is delivered is of growing concern within the profession. Studies have found that the national curriculum for physical education (NCPE) is being delivered ineffectively in primary schools. This study offers an in-depth examination of the backgrounds and previous experiences of sports coaches as well as their perceptions of delivering primary PESS. Participant’s (N=30 15 males, 15 females, 23.33±5.498 years) were sport coaches with at least two years of experience. Participants completed an online questionnaire and a semi-structured interview, with a thematic analysis used to analyse the data collected. Variations were found in the participant’s experiences. Issues relating to the delivery of PESS were found as many participants were unsure what the NCPE was. More training in child development, pedagogy and behavioural management techniques were needed. Knowledge on gymnastics and dance were weak with more collaboration between coaches and teachers needed as well as primary schools offering support, assess and help towards coaches. Further research is needed upon the perceptions, backgrounds and training of coaches delivering PESS. The implications of these results are for more training courses to be available that are in line with the government policies to increase childhood health.
